AX-1 Modular Home Automation System

Personal project - not affiliated with Teenage Engineering

What if Teenage Engineering made a home automation system?

Every module can be moved around, remapped to different functions, and swapped between control boards. Users have the freedom to create a control scheme that fits their unique home automation systems.

Ideation

The Teenage Engineering brand consists of fun, tasteful tools for creative people.

I started with the idea of enabling the user to create a set of physical controls that perfectly suits their environment. Through sketching, I honed in on the pegboard as an intuitive way to give ultimate freedom to the user.

Modular System

Small satellite boards can be installed separately from the Base Station, to provide physical controls in areas that don’t need access to central automation functions.

This board is configured as a six band equalizer for audio systems.

User Interface

The touchscreen is used for initial setup, mapping button functions, and more sophisticated home automation functions. The integrated knob works within the screen to bring physicality and precision into every interaction.
